Mate tea has a long tradition in South America and is a solid part of the culture and everyday life there. The indigenous people of the continent, the Guaraní, have been using the leaves of the Mate shrub as a medicinal plant and for the production of tea for thousands of years. Later, the Incas and Tupis also adopted this tradition and spread it throughout the country. Today, Mate tea is particularly popular in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil.
